How the operation actually runs

Fake job adverts in Uganda follow the same sequence again and again. Once you can see the shape, it stops working on you.

  1. Copy a believable advert Often a real vacancy from a real employer, reposted with the contact details swapped for theirs.
  2. Spread it where trust travels WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages and Telegram channels, forwarded by people who mean well.
  3. Reply fast and warmly You are shortlisted almost immediately. The speed is the hook: it feels like luck.
  4. Introduce a small fee Registration, medical form, uniform, training, transport for the interview. Small enough to feel reasonable.
  5. Ask for the originals Certificates or ID held as “security”, which turns into leverage for the next request.
  6. Escalate, then vanish A second fee, then a third. When you stop paying or start asking questions, the number goes dead.

    Uganda Police (CID)

    Open a case of obtaining money by false pretences at the nearest station, or the CID Commander at Kampala Metropolitan Police for larger networks. Ask for the case reference.

    Labour officers handle unpaid work, withheld documents and employment disputes. Every district has one and it costs nothing.

If you have already paid

Six things to do, in this order

Losing money to a fake advert is not carelessness. These operations are practised and they target people who need work. What follows is ordered by what protects your chance of recovery.

  1. 01 Stop paying immediately

    Not one more instalment, whatever you are told about losing what you have already paid. That threat is part of the method.

  2. 02 Save every piece of evidence now

    Mobile money messages, receipts, the advert, screenshots of chats, the phone numbers used, any names. Back it up somewhere off your phone.

  3. 03 Report to police and get a reference

    Obtaining money by false pretences is a criminal offence. Without a case file there is no investigation and no recovery.

  4. 04 Report the receiving number

    If you paid by mobile money, report the number to MTN or Airtel fraud support. Transactions leave a trail and the line can be flagged.

  5. 05 Find the others

    One fake advert is sent to hundreds of people, so you are very unlikely to be the only one who paid. Group complaints get investigated; single ones often stall.

  6. 06 Do not pay anyone to recover it

    A second person promising to get your money back for a fee is the same fraud wearing a different shirt.
